Non-Residents: What You Need to Know by Year-End

If you own property in Spain but don’t live here, keep an eye on these key deadlines approaching soon. Because, as you know, the tax office will find you, whether you're in Spain or not. Here’s a rundown of your tax obligations so you aren’t caught off guard.

In Mainland Spain

Tax on Non-Rented Property for 2023: If you own property in mainland Spain that wasn’t rented out, you’re still required to pay a tax simply for owning it. This is an annual tax, and the deadline to file it is December 31, 2024. Mark this date!

Tax on Rental Income for 2024: If you earned rental income on this property in 2024, you will, for the first time, need to file an annual tax return for those earnings. The filing period runs from January 1 to January 20, 2025.

In the Canary Islands

Tax on Non-Rented Property for 2023: If your property is in the Canary Islands and wasn’t rented, the same tax as in mainland Spain applies. The deadline is also December 31, 2024.

Tax on Rental Income for 2024: For rental income earned in 2024 on properties in the Canary Islands, you need to file from January 1 to January 20, 2025.

IGIC (Canary Islands General Indirect Tax): If you’re renting in the Canary Islands for vacations or commercial use, you’ll also need to file IGIC quarterly in addition to your annual return. Don’t forget to file a prior declaration before starting the rental.

Remember…

Don’t let deadlines sneak up on you. These tax obligations can feel overwhelming, but keeping everything organized will save you bigger headaches with the tax office. Set reminders and prepare to comply in advance.
